Peel sweet potatoes and cut into evenly sized small pieces for uniform cooking.

Place sweet potatoes, heavy cream, butter, sugar, and salt into a large saucepan.

Cover the saucepan and cook over low heat for 35 to 45 minutes, until sweet potatoes are very tender and easily pierced with a fork.

Remove the pan from heat. Mash sweet potatoes thoroughly using a potato masher to desired consistency.

Adjust seasoning with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste before serving.
