Preheat oven to 175°C. Lightly grease a 23×33 cm baking dish with butter.

Arrange half of the rye bread slices on the bottom of the prepared dish.

Distribute half of the chicken or beef evenly over the bread, then sprinkle with half of the Swiss cheese and half of the sauerkraut. Drizzle with half of the Thousand Island dressing.

Repeat the process with the remaining bread, meat, cheese, sauerkraut, and dressing to create a second layer.

Evenly sprinkle garlic powder and dollop Dijon mustard across the top layer.

Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes.

Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10–15 minutes until the top is golden brown and the filling is heated through.
