In a medium saucepan, combine butter, sugar, water, and salt. Heat over medium, stirring constantly, until butter is fully melted and the mixture begins to boil.

Attach a candy thermometer to the pan. Continue cooking, stirring gently, until the mixture reaches 150°C and turns golden brown.

Immediately remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Carefully pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly.

While toffee is still hot, sprinkle chocolate chips over the surface. Allow them to melt, then spread evenly with an offset spatula.

Sprinkle chopped toasted almonds or pecans over the melted chocolate and press gently to adhere.
